MCWG, LMV, TRANS: the vehicle class codes on your licence explained

The common non-transport codes

• MCWOG / MC 50CC — motorcycle without gear, up to 50cc (mopeds, gearless scooters under the cap).
• MCWG — motorcycle with gear (and, in practice, any two-wheeler once you hold it).
• LMV — light motor vehicle: a private car, jeep or small van up to 7,500 kg.
• LMV-NT / LMV(NT) — the non-transport form of LMV, i.e. private use only.
• CRANE, ROADROLLER, TRACTOR, FORKLIFT — own-use plant and agricultural vehicles. These stay non-transport even though they are large.

Transport (commercial) codes

Transport classes let you carry goods or passengers for hire and need a separate transport endorsement plus, usually, a minimum age of 20 and 8th-standard schooling.

• LMV-TR — light transport (a taxi, small goods carrier).
• MGV / HGV / HGMV / HMV / HTV — medium and heavy goods vehicles.
• PSV / HPMV / passenger — buses and passenger vehicles for hire.
• TRANS — a generic transport endorsement some states print.

The category is a property of the class code, not of where it was endorsed. A CRANE class added later at a different RTO is still non-transport.

Reading the COV table

Each row shows the class, its issue date, and the RTO code that endorsed it (for example BR28). If you added a class in another state, that row's RTO code will differ from your home RTO — that is normal and does not change your licence number.

Badge columns

The Badge Number / Badge Issued Date / Badge Issued By columns apply only to commercial drivers who hold a conductor or driver badge. They are blank for a normal private licence.
