Get your driving licence on your phone: DigiLocker and mParivahan

A digital driving licence in DigiLocker or mParivahan is treated as equivalent to the physical card under the Motor Vehicles Act. Getting it onto your phone takes a minute once your mobile number matches RTO records.

DigiLocker

  1. Sign in to DigiLocker with the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
  2. Search issued documents for 'Driving Licence' under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
  3. Enter your DL number and date of birth; DigiLocker fetches it from the national register.
  4. It now sits under 'Issued Documents' and can be shown offline or shared as a PDF.

mParivahan

  1. Install mParivahan and register with your mobile number.
  2. On the dashboard choose 'Add / Virtual DL', enter the DL number and date of birth.
  3. The Virtual DL is added to the app and carries a timestamp and QR code for verification.

Both need the mobile number in your RTO record to be current. If the fetch fails with 'record not found' but the licence-verification site shows your details, the mismatch is usually the phone number — update it at the RTO.

Digital copy vs a printout

The DigiLocker and mParivahan versions are the record itself, pulled live from the government database and carrying a verifiable QR. A page you print — from their PDF or from anywhere else — is just a picture of that data and has no independent validity. Keep the digital one for anything official; a printed card is only a personal convenience copy.

Why keep a printed copy at all

A wallet card doesn't need a charged phone or a signal, it's easy to photocopy for a form, and it's a tidy backup while the Smart Card is being reissued. That's the narrow, legitimate use — not a replacement for the digital licence.
