Driving licence renewal in India: window, fees and what actually takes time

The renewal window

• You can apply up to one year before expiry and up to one year after without a penalty beyond the normal fee.
• Between one and five years late, the licence can still be renewed with a late fee.
• More than five years after expiry, most states make you re-test.

After 40

From age 40, a renewed licence is issued for shorter terms (commonly 10 years, then 5), and you must attach a medical certificate in Form 1A from a registered doctor. Transport licences need the medical certificate at every renewal regardless of age.

How to apply

1. On the Sarathi / Parivahan portal, choose 'Services on Driving Licence' → 'DL Renewal' and select your state and RTO.
2. Fill Form 9, upload your photo, signature, existing DL and (if applicable) the medical certificate.
3. Pay the fee online and book a slot only if your RTO requires a visit — many now approve renewal without one.

The fee itself is small. The cost that varies is the late fee, which climbs the longer you wait past expiry.

The wait nobody warns you about

Approval can be same-day, but the physical Smart Card is printed centrally and dispatched by post — often two to four weeks, sometimes longer. In the meantime the renewed licence is already valid: show the digital version in mParivahan or DigiLocker, which updates as soon as approval goes through.

While you wait

The digital licence covers you legally. A printed personal copy of the renewed details is just a convenience for forms and photocopies — not a substitute for the Smart Card or the digital record.
